This was one of the things that bothered me the most about PATHFINDER’S WAY. I’m not a fan of the hero manipulating the heroine into a position of having to agree to her own kidnapping because there is no other choice than to do as he wants. Personal caveat: I did have a big problem with the story, which is why I gave it a 4/5 on Goodreads. The futuristic setting works wonderfully, however, and is used smartly. I called it Science-Fantasy because truthfully you could take away the science and leave it as straight fantasy and it would work just as well. The book is about Kira, her secrets, and her relationships with all around her, and (IMO) it succeeds on all levels. The romance is a slow build with obvious chemistry-at-first-sight, but the book is not a romance, so don’t go in expecting sex scenes and romantic angst. There are quite a few secondary characters, and some might get mixed-up at first, especially when she arrives at her home planet, but they mostly stand on their own.

I get tired of the super smart-ass/quippy/borderline rude thieves/down-on-their-luck female protagonists common in the genre, so Kira was a welcome surprise. This was such an entertaining read! Kira was a great character, sure of herself and aware of the consequences of her choices, and her sidekick AI/friend Jin was a joy to read. When she happens to be forced to restock in the wrong space station at the wrong time… well, turns out she is not human at all and the members of her race, a species known to wield “magic,” want her back. RULES OF REDEMPTION is the story of Kira, a retired war hero trying to live in anonymity mostly because she doesn’t think she’s a hero at all and because her old war comrades agree to that. White with her Fantasy book PATHFINDER’S WAY, which both entertained and angered me (you can see my review here ), and though I tried her other series, nothing really stuck to me.
